Studio/Office Mate Wanted – Photography Studio in the Heights, Houston Texas

Back at the beginning of 2009 when I first leased the whole building for my studio space, I talked about looking for a studiomate. Then it took a few months to get the space set up, wedding season arrived, and well… now it is October and I’ve been talking about it again. It just doesn’t make sense to have all this space just for myself if I’m not up there all the time.

Ideally, I would like to find two or three people to share the space with me. I’m open to having a studiomate that is a wedding photographer or portrait photographer. Yes, I’m a wedding & boudoir photographer, but I consider you my peers, not my competition. It would also be a great space for a wedding planner, an invitation artist / graphic designer, someone that works in PR or as a consultant, or someone who just wants a nice place to meet with their clients.

Address: 1024 Studewood, in the Heights, just south of 11th Street.

Some of the details: The building used to be a house. It is a good size (1500 square feet, I think?) and it is awesome for meetings with clients or meetings with large groups. There is the front room (featured in the photograph above) which is slightly arranged now from the photo above. We’ve had meetings with 30+ people in the space, workshops, conferences and other events there. My main requirements for the walls is my claim on the one wall where my 60″ canvas print is hanging. The TV has a permanent space as well for easy viewing from the couches. The other two walls could be designated for use by my studiomates.

Upstairs: Ok, it is up 4 steps, but it is still up some stairs. So I call it the upstairs. There is a large main room that at one time was probably the living room and dining room area. I use this space when I have photo shoots. It could be used to display art and photography as well, but it has to be work that could be removed if needed for sessions. There is a small 11×11 or so room that used to be an office and is currently unused. It would make a great work space, or I’ve considered setting up my white seamless there for photo sessions. There is a bathroom (with a tub that doesn’t work). Then there is the dressing room for sessions, which is another 11×11 room. It could also be used for a workspace when sessions aren’t taking place, or it could be a second meeting space if someone was holding a meeting in the front room since it has a door. The back bedroom is set up for boudoir sessions, and I’ve done portrait shoots in there as well. The “bed” is a futon and can be folded up. There is a kitchen space, but it does not have a stove or fridge in it at this time.

The space is mostly furnished, with the exception of the office room. The current furniture needs to stay in the studio. You may use anything as props for photo shoots if you’re a photographer.

Access: 24 hours, 7 days a week, based on availability. You can use all spaces as needed. It is possible to work out sign arrangements for the front of the building as well.

Access Conditions: Since I do boudoir sessions at the studio space 2-3 times a month, I would be setting up a group calendar on Google Calendar so that if there is a session I could block off the time. When I have a session, I need exclusive access for the studio. Sessions are normally set up at least 2 weeks in advance, so there should be plenty of notice. (I’m actually taking on a larger portion of the rent for this privilege.) There is also a photographer meetup that takes place on the evening of the First Thursday of every month at the studio. This is a standing event. Occasionally I’ve hosted workshops at the space (two times in 2009), also planned well in advance, and will continue to do so. When workshops take place, exclusive access will most likely be necessary.

Being able to work with the calendar to schedule the space is essential for everyone sharing the space. Must play with others. Must not run with scissors. You break it, you buy it. (I’d add no shirt, no shoes, no service … but that doesn’t work with the boudoir photography!)

Price: $500/month for an individual studiomate, includes utilities. Deposit equal to first month’s rent is needed. Open to discussing other arrangements; contact me and we can work something out! A November 1st move-in is ideal if it works for you! Current lease would be for 3 months (to line up with my lease renewal), and then 6-12 month terms after that.

Help! I Broke the Blog!

I knew I shouldn’t jinx it. I knew better then to talk about my daily blogging streak and how well I was doing with it. Of course, as soon as I did that, the blog breaks. I can’t upload photos to the site right now! And what good is a photography blog without photos?

I’m getting it fixed today hopefully – the pictures and posts will return by tomorrow! I miss my photo uploader! I have so much to share!

Tonight I’m off to Atlanta — I have time blocks in my schedule for getting work done, and I still have a time slot or two for a photo shoot while I’m there as well! Let me know if you would like more details!

Changes Ahead!

With 2009 just around the corner, there is a big change coming up that I wanted to make sure everyone knows about!

New pricing will go into effect on December 1, 2008 – if you have contacted me and received the current price sheet, that will be honored until December 10, 2008. The new pricing structure will be completely revised, and you can choose between them to decide what fits your needs best. I don’t normally announce pricing changes like this, but since it is such a radical overhaul, I wanted to get the word out!

Many weddings, engagement sessions, and boudoir shoots to be blogged soon! My number 1 priority is getting galleries online, so I have a long list of posts to make once I am done! (Recently posted in the galleries: Andrea & Rich’s wedding, Sarah & Jason’s wedding, Samantha & Ben’s engagement session and civil ceremony, and many others!)

Hurricane Ike Status Update Update

On Friday, September 26, our power was *finally* restored at our house – which is also my primary workspace. (I shoot at the studio / office in the Heights and hold meetings there — but I do business work, proofing, preparing prints, all that stuff at the house.) My birthday was on Saturday, along with Erika & Jason’s wedding, so we didn’t actually pack up and return from my parent’s house until yesterday.

This week prints will be going to the lab, DVDs will be burned, and everything will be going out in the mail. Thank you *SO MUCH* to everyone who was so patient in waiting for things! I’m finally able to send email again from my computer, so I’ll keep you posted when things are on their way!

Hurricane Ike Status Update

I thought a post was in order to let everyone know my status during Hurricane Ike:

- My family is fine.
- My house is fine. Tree limbs down, but none on the house. No power as of 9/23/08 (11 days so far), so we are staying with my parents who do have power.
- ~~None of us have internet access – not at my house or my parent’s house.~~ My parents now have internet access. Yeah! I can only respond to email via my iPhone though, and it is somewhat tedious so I try to limit it.
- I’m still working. Matter of fact, I’ve posted the first half of the proofs from Tricia & Daniel’s wedding today.
- I’m trying to keep driving to a minimum until the gas shortage is over – I want to make sure I have gas to get to weddings. I’m starting to see gas stations without lines now, so hopefully that will pass by this weekend. Gas is much more available now, but there are still traffic lights without power, so I’m still trying to keep driving to a minimum for the time being.
- Any print orders or DVDs that need to be shipped out are currently delayed. They will hopefully go out next week, but it could be two weeks.
- Posting things online in galleries is also delayed until we get the internet access back at our house or my parent’s house. I’ve tried at public wifi access places, but they won’t allow large uploads like that. I also posted Leah & Ryan’s wedding photos last Friday, along with Erika & Jason’s engagement session.

I’m sorry about the inconvenience for everyone — trust me, I feel your pain! I’ll update this post as I know more, and keep it at the top of the page until it no longer applies.

I’ve received several emails asking about available dates for rescheduled weddings — I am rather heavily booked for the fall, but I am working to get together a list of other photographers that are available for fall dates. Please feel free to email me to get the list for a certain date, even if I am booked. I’m happy to do anything I can to help out!

Good News | Bad News

Hi Everyone! Good news! My hosting company has finally figured out what the problem was that was causing me to not be able to send emails for over a day or two. (I hope it is fixed, because no email sending really stresses me out.) I was able to receive email, just not send.

The bad news? I now have 2+ days worth of email to respond to. Eep. So if you’re waiting for an email from me and you haven’t heard anything, I promise – I’m going through them as fast as I can!

Cleaning House

Wait a Minute Mr. Postman!

My email has gotten a little bit crazy – I’m not sure if my laptop is still on Vegas time or if the problem is with my hosting company, but either way it is being especially fussy about sending email over the past 48 hours. I’m having problems sending from the iPhone too, which is my fallback option when the server is acting up.

So if you haven’t heard back from me – I promise, I’m trying! I have emails from while I was in Vegas to answer still also – I didn’t pay the $17 a day for WiFi while I was there, so I know I’ll be writing a lot of emails over the next few days!

Feel free to call me if you need to reach me – otherwise, the hosting company and my tech support (aka Mike) are working on sorting out what the problems are and I should be back on track when I return from our Easter holiday!

News, News, News!

On Thursday, I received the email I’ve been waiting for – the exciting invitation to be a member of the WPJA – Wedding Photojournalists Association! Oh goodness, ever since I discovered the WPJA last year, I have wanted to be a member. So when I got the news – I was so excited! I think I have told every single person I have talked to since then! What an honor, I can’t even put it into words.

On to the other news:
On Wednesday, after seeing the segment that aired on the Today Show about Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep Organization, I knew it was time to put my talents to use and volunteer. Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep is an organization of over 3000 photographers who volunteer to take the call in the time of need and offer newborn photography sessions for infants who will not live past their birth. This is another organization that I learned of last year, and while I felt the call to sign up for it, I kept holding back from joining – simply out of fear. I realized that fear was no excuse, and while it will be an emotional task if I am called upon to help out a family, it does not compare at all to what those families are going through and I want to be able to do what I can to help.

This is not something I normally like to write about, but I want to help get the word out that this group exists, for anyone who reads this and might need to call on them in the future. If you are a photographer, I strongly encourage you to consider joining.

I received an email today letting me know that I had received a huge honor — I’ve been accepted to be a member of Photographik! I’m so excited about this, I can’t even explain it! Maybe sharing some of the information from the site will help to put into words what I can’t seem to express.

We are determined to become THE place to find talented, truly elite photographers providing wedding and portrait photography services to clients in the United States and all over the world. We screen every member’s online portfolio and admit only those photographers who possess a high level of artistic and technical aptitude. By offering the consumer a pre-screened directory of photographers sortable by region and area of expertise, we hope to expose the consumer to top notch photographers in their region as well as highlight the differences between cookie cut photography corporations and independent contractors whose work, we feel, is far more artistic and beautiful.

Just go and read a little bit about their criteria for who they list on the site, and you will see even more about why it is such an honor to me. This isn’t your usual site where just anyone can sign up – I actually requested consideration several weeks ago, and only after they reviewed my work for the following, was I accepted:

I’m just so excited, I had to share right away with everyone! My listing will be live there in the next day or two.
