Photographik!

I received an email today letting me know that I had received a huge honor — I’ve been accepted to be a member of Photographik! I’m so excited about this, I can’t even explain it! Maybe sharing some of the information from the site will help to put into words what I can’t seem to express.
We are determined to become THE place to find talented, truly elite photographers providing wedding and portrait photography services to clients in the United States and all over the world. We screen every member’s online portfolio and admit only those photographers who possess a high level of artistic and technical aptitude. By offering the consumer a pre-screened directory of photographers sortable by region and area of expertise, we hope to expose the consumer to top notch photographers in their region as well as highlight the differences between cookie cut photography corporations and independent contractors whose work, we feel, is far more artistic and beautiful.
Just go and read a little bit about their criteria for who they list on the site, and you will see even more about why it is such an honor to me. This isn’t your usual site where just anyone can sign up - I actually requested consideration several weeks ago, and only after they reviewed my work for the following, was I accepted:
- Technical proficiency
- Creativity, Originality, Emotion, Art
- Online Presentation
I’m just so excited, I had to share right away with everyone! My listing will be live there in the next day or two. Thank you again to everyone for your support and encouragement — especially to the fantastic couples and their families & friends that I’ve had the opportunity to work with! I wouldn’t be doing what I absolutely love without all of you!
Brandi & Donald - Engagement Photography, Houston, Texas

I met up with Brandi & Donald in the Houston Heights area on 19th Street in early December. Their engagement photography session was the first one I did after my surgery, and they were so awesome in being patient with my low energy level. I absolutely loved spending time with the two of them! It is so obvious when you’re around them how much they love each other and how happy they make each other! I mean, just look at those smiles!
It was one of those Chamber of Commerce days here, not too hot or too cold, beautiful blue sky - just all around perfect! I’m so glad we were able to spend time hanging out and having fun on our photo hunt, and I love all of our photos from the day! I can’t wait for their wedding this June!
So we’re walking down 19th Street in the Heights. We spot these old trucks, behind a fence that is unlocked. Donald commented that he liked the trucks, and with that - I knew we had to get some shots with them!
I showed him this on the preview screen, and we joked that if he had an album, this would be the cover shot.
He was whispering silly secrets in her ear to make her laugh, and then went in for the kiss!
Even though we were in a commercial area in the Heights, we still found a bit of nature for some shots.
Real Simple Planning!

After seeing my friend Eric Hegwer mention the other day that he was a part of the Real Simple Guide to Wedding Planning, I couldn’t resist picking up my very own copy at the store today. (You know, it is sort of funny to look around the house of someone who has been married for four years and see all of the wedding magazines I have here!) I haven’t sat down yet to spend a lot of time with it, but from what I have read so far it is a great resource! And Real Simple always has great info online to go with their magazines - be sure to check out Questions to Ask Your Photographer, which I plan on writing an answer page to here on the blog this weekend.
I also recommend the Must-Have Wedding Shot List article - which really lists shots that most wedding photojournalist style photographers normally get. I know they are all shots that Elaine & I work together to get at all of our weddings. Be cautious with giving your photographer a shot list though. I was once an attendant at a wedding where the bride was so focused on getting everything on her must-have shot list of posed shots, she actually missed at least half of her reception! Your guests are there to have a great time with you, and as a photographer I always encourage people to spend time being the center of attention at the party. I promise, in the end you will treasure the real photos that happen capturing the reception so much more than the set-up shots you just had to have! Throughout the day, I’m looking for those natural, beautiful moments, all which mean more than anything else in the end.
Pick up your very own copy and enjoy!
Mariely & Mauro - Wedding Photography, Houston, Texas

As I mentioned previously, I used to work with Mauro back in 2000 - 2001 at a web design firm. He truly was one of my favorite people to work with, and when he contacted me after spotting that I am now a wedding photographer on LinkedIn, I was really excited about getting to spend his big day with him & Mariely. Unfortunately, fate got in the way. I had major surgery with a 6 week recovery period just 1 week before their wedding. The doctor said that I could attend the ceremony, but I wasn’t supposed to take photographs while there.
Oops. I sort of failed on that one. The above photo is when Mariely spotted me with my camera. I tried two times to make myself just sit down, but I couldn’t do it. I kept seeing things I wanted to capture. So I photographed the ceremony, but didn’t go on to the reception. Elaine stepped in for me, along with Jesus of Decca Photography. I let the two of them take charge for the getting ready photos beforehand and the reception photos afterwards, but it was fun joining them for the ceremony itself. (All of the following photographs were taken by me.)
Slideshow coming soon of their big day! Congratulations again, Mariely & Mauro! Best wishes to both of you!
Mariely & Mauro - Engagement Session, Downtown Houston, Texas

It was such an honor to be a part of Mariely & Mauro’s wedding plans! I used to work with Mauro years ago when I was in sales for a web design firm and he was a graphic designer. He was one of my favorite people to work with - so it was such an honor when he found me through LinkedIn and he & Mariely selected me to photograph their wedding. I was so happy for him, finding such a beautiful woman to spend the rest of his life with! They are both such wonderful people!
We held off doing Mariely & Mauro’s engagement session because we wanted to wait for the cooler fall weather. Of course, this is Houston - and sometimes, cool weather never comes! Unfortunately, after the two weddings on November 10th, and Andi & Jason’s engagement session, I ended up admitted to the hospital for severe anemia and other problems. I was supposed to have minor surgery that week with a two day recovery time, and instead ended up having major surgery with a six week recovery. All of that meant that I wasn’t going to be able to shoot their engagement session, or their wedding.
I’m fortunate to have such a great network of friends and photographers here in Houston, and I immediately called on them once I got the news. It was all just such an ironic twist of fate, considering the fact that I had photographed the Emergency Wedding just a week before! I called on Elaine Mesker-Garcia and asked Jeff Balke to assist her with the shoot, and they headed out on Saturday, November 17, 2007 to Eleanor Tinsley Park next to downtown Houston. It was so comforting knowing that everything was in their very capable hands - I love their shots from the day!

Thank you again to Elaine & Jeff for taking care of everything for me! You guys are awesome!
